SAMPLE LESSONS
SCREENSHOTS
mobile webpagescreenshotA million uses. (Workshoppers will see hundreds of samples.) If you’re not familiar with this simple-but-powerful tool, you may be pleasantly surprised to know that a no-frills screenshot-taking application is already installed on your PC (and quite possibly on your mobile device). Another possible pleasant surprise: if you need a more feature-rich screenshot app, you can get one for less than $50 (which may well be the best $50 you’ll spend on software this year!).
IMAGE, SCREEN and PRINT RESOLUTION
Even if you never thought much about the different meanings of resolution, you probably already half-know them. (Really!—as you’ll see at the workshop.) Lessons will help users avoid some common—and often costly— resolution-related mistakes. Workshoppers will see such things as what’s going on when you change a image’s resolution (”resample”). You’ll know and appreciate the difference between pixel-based images (aka “bitmaps”) and vector-based images (“outlines”), and see why vectors are “resolution-independent.” Lots more!
DIGITAL CAMERAS and DIGITAL PHOTOS
Helpful lessons for getting more out of the digital photos you and your fellow information workers take.
Workshop lessons include: photo viewing and display tips; copying and transmitting digital photos; printing digital photos; online photo-sharing services; tagging/geo-tagging; and more!
LAYERS
Your graphic designers know why layers are so useful--and so should you. You already know about layers from the media “consumption” side. See what’s going on from on the media “construction” side. (Guess what--it’s probably pretty much what you suspected!) In the Scribbles ’n Bits Workshop you will see and understand layer basics, such as: making new layers; duplicating layers, arranging layers, deleting layers, naming layers, hiding layers, locking layers and moving things from one layer to another.
FILE MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW
Desktop and network SEARCH is amazingly useful—but don’t let anyone tell you that search eliminates the need for good file management practices. Digital work style productivity starts with a well-structured file management system. (NOW as much as ever!) The workshop covers many tips and tricks for creating and maintaining a well-organized, coherent, consistent, readily understood, easy-to-remember “bits structure.”
File formats and format conversion REVIEW AND OVERVIEW (including batch conversions)
This workshop session includes related topics such as the ever-useful “Open With” and the oft under-appreciated “Save As” commands. Also: generic file formats and native file formats. A brief mention on how XML tries to achieve the grand and elusive goal of codewriters (namely, INTEROPERABILITY).
What’s so special about the PASTE SPECIAL command?
See how and why this command earns its name. (And how it’s special in different ways in different applications.) Understand why Paste Special is a “must-have” skill for many information professionals.
