{"id":9,"date":"2013-04-07T04:40:37","date_gmt":"2013-04-07T08:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scribblers.com\/weblog\/?p=9"},"modified":"2013-04-13T14:37:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-13T18:37:57","slug":"its-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scribblers.com\/weblog\/2013\/04\/07\/its-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Trubba not, world!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u201cWhen the subject <\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">is <b>information work<\/b>, it\u2019s never a mistake to start with some insights f<\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">rom<\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\"> the person who coined the term.\u201d \u2014tried-n-true scribblers&#8217; axiom<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s follow that adage and see where it takes us.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some key points taken from a favorite <b>Peter Drucker<\/b> article. (Incidentally, the ace business management consultant and all-around sage, also coined the term \u201cinformation <i>worker<\/i>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>In a 1992 Wall Street Journal op-ed piece headlined &#8220;Be Data Literate\u2014Know What to Know,\u201d Mr. Drucker advised executives to regularly ask themselves these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What information do I need to do my job?<\/li>\n<li>when do I need it?<\/li>\n<li>in what form?<\/li>\n<li>from whom should I be getting it?<\/li>\n<li>what new tasks can I tackle now that I get all these data?<\/li>\n<li>which tasks should I do differently?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Questions originally asked of mainframe and Windows 3.1 information workers, are still well worth considering some twenty years further into the information age. Likewise, today&#8217;s mobile, hyper-connected, post-Web 2.0 era information workers may benefit by noting a few other questions, Drucker pointedly added:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what information do I owe?<\/li>\n<li>to whom?<\/li>\n<li>when?<\/li>\n<li>in what form?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&lt;Reader&#8217;s Note: hyperlink to the full article below&gt;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before we return to those focusing directives, here&#8217;s a few words regarding what this scribbles &#8216;n bits weblog is about.<\/p>\n<p>Like its sister site, <strong>scribblers.com<\/strong>, the Scribblers Media blog explores and and tries to better understand information systems. And how individuals and teams can better use various information systems to get stuff done. (That and related matters are sometimes referred to around here as &#8220;digital work style skills and practices.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Said another way (and getting back to Drucker&#8217;s questions), this weblog is largely about the <em>getting and giving of task-related information<\/em>. With a special interest in the <em>FORMS<\/em> the task-related information takes.<\/p>\n<p>Today, of course, more and more of the information we use to do our jobs is digital information. (At least at some stage in its life cycle.) Which means there\u2019s all kinds of incredibly easy and amazingly powerful ways to transform and transmit it. And more devised daily. Suffice it to say here that this scribbles \u2019n bits blog will probe various such information tools and channels.
